    Maria Ramos Nino

    Biography

    Dr. Maria E. Ramos-Nino is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pharmacology at St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Surrey, UK, and holds dual degrees in Biology and Food Engineering.

    Her career spans Venezuela, the United States, and the Caribbean, with research focused on translational microbiology, environmental surveillance, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and inflammation-associated diseases. She has held academic and research appointments at the University of Vermont and Wayne State University and served as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

    At SGU, Dr. Ramos-Nino leads multiple One Health and wastewater-based surveillance projects, has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and holds a U.S. patent in cancer therapeutics. She has supervised and mentored numerous graduate and doctoral candidates, many of whom have advanced to prominent research and clinical roles.

    A licensed clinical microbiologist (ASCP), she directs the SGU Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and actively contributes to international societies in immunology, pathology, and infectious disease research. Her work integrates laboratory science, public health, and global collaboration to address pressing health challenges.
