Biography
Calum Macpherson is Professor and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Director of Research at St. George’s University (SGU). He is the Founding Director and Vice President of the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation. He completed his PhD at Imperial College, London, joined AMREF in Kenya for a decade serving as Field Project Leader for the National Hydatid Control Program in Turkana. He joined the Swiss Tropical Institute in Tanzania as Director with oversight of the Malaria vaccine, the nutrition, immunity infection and environment, schistosomiasis program onchocerciasis program coordinating the affiliations with many international organizations, including WHO. This period was followed by a year at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He moved to the University of the West Indies in 1990 as Professor of Veterinary Parasitology. He has supervised over 100 MSc and PhD students in Kenya, Tanzania, India, the UK, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada. He has served on many WHO, PAHO and other international committees, including from 2013 serving as a member of the Research Advisory Committee of CARPHA. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and edited or written 5 books and 17 book chapters. His research focuses on human behaviour, epidemiology and the public health importance of zoonoses. During his career, Dr. Macpherson has raised over USD 30 million in grants from numerous international donors. He holds numerous Adjunct Professor positions at universities in Kenya and Asia.
