Bio
Dr. Marios Loukas obtained his MD degree from Warsaw University School of Medicine and a PhD in pathology from the Institute of Rheumatology at the Department of Pathology in Warsaw, Poland. He completed post-doctoral research at Ulm University Clinic in Germany, focusing on arteriogenesis and angiogenesis.
He began his academic career at Harvard Medical School as a lecturer and laboratory instructor for the Human Body Course. In 2005, he joined St. George’s University (SGU) in Grenada, where he was appointed Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomical Sciences. By 2008, he had also assumed the role of Assistant Dean of Basic and Allied Health Sciences, leading the creation of innovative divisions in Ultrasound in Medical Education and Biomedical Visualization.
In 2012, Dr. Loukas became Dean of Research at SGU, where he worked to develop a transdisciplinary research infrastructure to promote translational research and strengthen collaboration between basic and clinical sciences. In 2015, he was elected President of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, appointed Dean of Basic Sciences at SGU, and served as Vice Chair of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions. He became Dean of the School of Medicine in 2021.
Dr. Loukas has authored more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and 25 books. He has contributed to landmark medical textbooks, such as Gray’s Anatomy, and serves as Co-Editor of Clinical Anatomy and founding Editor-in-Chief of Translational Research in Anatomy.
In addition to his SGU roles, Dr. Loukas also holds professorial appointments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, and College of Medical Sciences at SGMK Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School in Olsztyn Poland. In January 2025, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Marii Sklodowskiej-Curie University in Poland. Effective July 1, 2025, he became President of St. George’s University while continuing as Dean of the School of Medicine.
Research & Interests
- My research spans clinical and surgical anatomy, cardiovascular pathology, translational anatomy and educational innovations. I am actively advancing anatomy education through AI-driven innovation and ultrasound-based teaching. With more than 900 peer-reviewed publications, my work appears in Clinical Anatomy, Cardiovascular Pathology, Journal of Neurosurgery, and Gray's Anatomy. Notable contributions include multiple textbook chapters, major atlases, and leadership of large-scale meta-analyses shaping contemporary anatomical science.
