    Dr. Josephine Afema is an associate professor within the Department of Pathobiology at St. George’s University. Her expertise and research interests center around preventive veterinary medicine, epidemiology, wildlife health and conservation, and veterinary public health. Specifically, she specializes in using integrated approaches to understand zoonotic disease transmission; the impact of bacterial pathogens on animal health and the livelihoods of rural communities; antibiotic use in food animals and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance; and the effect of anthropogenic activities on ecosystem health and dissemination of pathogens by migratory birds.

    Dr. Afema obtained her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. She then earned her Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine from University of California Davis, and Doctor of Philosophy from Washington State University in Pullman.
